Treatment of attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder
Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has an impact on the child with ADHD, on the family with a child with ADHD, and on all children with or without ADHD. The purpose of this review is to assess our current understanding of treatment options for ADHD and to discuss how to manage children with ADHD from a clinical perspective. The role of the clinician assuming primary responsibility for the management of ADHD is to synthesize and integrate the diagnostic information, and guide the individual and his or her parents toward a rational approach to treatment. The success of the treatment approach to ADHD requires the ability to coordinate an ongoing team effort. The environment can be engineered to ameliorate symptoms associated with ADHD but the core symptoms of ADHD response best to stimulant medication. The role of the clinician is to be knowledgeable regarding all the different modalities advocated for ADHD and to communicate our present scientific understanding to all involved in the care of the individual with this complex and chronic disorder.
